UEFA is involved in political repressions in Ukraine(open letter)
    Mr. Michel Platini
    President
    Union of European Football Associations

    Dear Mr. Platini,

The image of UEFA and the European Football Championship which is to be held in Ukraine and Poland in 2012 may suffer irreparable blow due to the scandal developing around ProstoPrint, a popular Ukrainian printing company which applies images on souvenir products and clothes from the clients’ layout originals.

On September 6, 2011, as a result of militia raid against the office of ProstoPrint, the company’s activity was paralyzed, the equipment was seized and criminal proceedings were taken against the employees.  They are accused of illegal application of Euro 2012 logo on the clothing.  It was revealed at once that the militiamen themselves had ordered application of such logo on 50 T-shirts so as to obtain the grounds for suspension of the company’s activity.

When the militia arranged such provocation, they committed a number of gross outrages: search without an order, seizure of property without an order, interrogation of the suspects and examination of the witnesses with the use of physical and psychological pressure (threats of violence).

The militiamen did not have any grounds for such measures against ProstoPrint because it is a customer, the owner of the product, who is liable for observance of incorporeal rights, but not the company which provides printing services.  This is governed both by the Ukrainian laws and by the relevant EU directives.  The employees of ProstoPrint were not even obliged to verify the customer’s right to use the logo of Euro 2012.

The real reason of the “assault” against the company with all this iniquity was not the T-shirts produced through the militia’s provocation but quite another product, very popular T-shirts among Ukrainians with inscriptions including keen criticism at President Yanukovych.

Under the pretext of UEFA’s incorporeal right protection, the nondemocratic Ukrainian powers have unleashed the campaign of illegal persecution of its citizens for political beliefs.  In order to defend our rights and freedoms set forth in the Constitution, we will do our best to draw a wide international response to this scandal.

It is especially outrageous that UEFA patent agents in Ukraine are directly involved in the crime against ProstoPrint as they have already written an application to prosecute the employees of the company criminally on the ground of the gross provocation committed by the militia.

We kindly request you to interfere with this situation personally and to withdraw the application of UEFA patent agents against ProstoPrint due to absence of the formal components of a crime in the company’s actions and in that way to prevent from using UEFA as a tool for political repressions.

    Obama The Moderate Conservative

    Fiscal Times:
Barack Obama: The Democrat's Richard Nixon

Here are a few examples of Obama's effective conservatism:
    • His stimulus bill was half the size that his advisers thought necessary;
    • He continued Bush’s war and national security policies without change and even retained Bush’s defense secretary;
    • He put forward a health plan almost identical to those that had been supported by Republicans such as Mitt Romney in the recent past, pointedly rejecting the single-payer option favored by liberals;
    • He caved to conservative demands that the Bush tax cuts be extended without getting any quid pro quo whatsoever;
    • And in the past few weeks he has supported deficit reductions that go far beyond those offered by Republicans.
Further evidence can be found in the writings of outspoken liberals such as New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, who has condemned Obama’s conservatism ever since he took office.

I generally agree with much of this perspective. What say you?

Has no one ever heard of hiding in plain sight? That is always the best strategy.

What I want to know is why bin Laden was shot. He would have been of far greater value to us all alive, and, according to the Executive Mansion, he was unarmed but "resisted". That requires shooting him in the head?

    Remember when?

Saw this posted elsewhere and it amused me:

"Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in TARP money, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes?

    Yeah, me neither."

    Democrats: Fighting for *You*

"Democrats have already ruled out agreeing to stop funding the year-old health care overhaul or to deny Planned Parenthood all federal money. And Reid has said he will not agree to any of the curbs Republicans want to place on the Environmental Protection Agency."

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ap_on_re_us/us_spending_showdown

Will liberals now admit that Democrats indeed stand and fight for something? Reid deserves even more credit: he's pro-life.

I also have a question. Last weekend in Iowa there was a gathering entitled the Conservative Principles Conference.

    What are "conservative principles"?

Is Obama Vulnerable for Bush's Catastrophes?

" . . . People perceive vulnerability in President Obama," says Darrell West, a political analyst at the Brookings Institution. "We have high unemployment, we have 2-1/2 wars, and there's a lot of contentiousness surrounding health care. So nobody's afraid to take on a sitting president."

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/372458;

It's amazing how differently I see it. I think the reason we have no Democratic challengers and Republicans have waited so long to declare is precisely due to Obama's strength. I see a field of potential Republican candidates who are afraid even to say they're planning to take him on. To me, it's pathetic.

All will be revealed. Time will tell.

Of course, the idea that Obama would be blamed for Bush's catastrophes is laughable, but the American Voter is too.

    War of Choice: Yes

When Bill Clinton invaded Kosovo because he felt like it and persuaded NATO to join in, I supported him. I support elective, optional war as an instrument of doing good in the World.

I was wrong whenever I stated (which I did for years) that I opposed Bush's war in Iraq because Iraq wasn't a threat to us. While that is true, I was so outraged I was blinded to my own inconsistency (or forgetfulness). I stated the wrong reason to oppose Bush. The right reason was the way he went about it: lying and bullying the World.

More accurately, if Bush had not stolen office (the illegitimacy that tarnishes everything) and said simply, "Hussein's a bad guy, and I want to take him out because I don't like him," I might have disagreed with his priorities (Burma, anyone?), but I would have said, "OK, that's legitimate. He's the President; if he thinks it's a good idea to remove Hussein, I don't have a problem with that."

It was indeed the lying and bullying. Decide, then actually persuade the allies, and you're all clear. If you cannot make a case to your allies, don't do it. But if it's really that bad, you should be able. Bill Clinton got NATO approval to stop the genocide in Kosovo. Surely one can get legitimate agreement for a legitimate interest, no?

Bush lied and bullied because in his heart he knew it was not legitimate so much as a personal grudge match. Everyone on Earth knows Bush simply wanted to expend hundreds of thousands of lives to avenge the threat on his father's life/"finish the job his father started"/impress his father. Everyone on Earth knows that Bush is, as a result, a monster.

    Motivation matters.

If I were president, I would seek UN support to tell the Burmese junta to start making preparations to hold UN-led elections to replace the junta. I would make a very persuasive case on behalf of the powerless Burmese people. And I like to think I would succeed in my persuasion. I like to think there would be real elections and a real handover of power, resulting in positive change. But if I didn't succeed in my persuasive attempt, I would honor the UN's will. That is the difference between Bush and me. But I would make an honest, respectful-to-the-World effort on the behalf of the oppressed.

And, with UN approval, I would back the demand with the real threat of force. If the Burmese didn't comply, they'd get popped like a pimple. Then you'd see some real liberation. But I would be honest with the American People. I would say this would be hard and costly. I would say that it would cost lives and money. But I would say that it would be worth it, and that the point of having the resources to help others was in using them to do so--legally (with the agreement of the international community). Frankly, if the international community couldn't see the need, then teaching the international community would become my first priority regarding Burma. First things first.

War should not be rushed. Bush, take note.

So - I'm assuming this community is dead and there's no moderators actually, well - moderating? Since we seem to have been taken over by Russians? I mean, sure, there may be a Russian democratic party (I don't know their politics) but as the user info of this community mentions America I'm a little unsure why all the entries lately have been in Russian.

Or should I just take this community off my friends list?

From a Discussion of the Estate Tax

Me: " . . . All citizens owe their existence and everything they have, including their lives, to the government, should the government require them. We are living borrowed lives. If the Government needs anything from us, it certainly has the right to take it. The Constitution acknowledges this in its statement that citizens at least must be compensated when the Government must take something. The compensation is the Government being nice, which, in my view, it isn't even required to be (the Constitution goes above and beyond the minimum). The idea of thinking that possessions and money are anything but loans of the government is beyond me. Government creates the conditions for everything. The extent to which you are allowed by government to earn money (itself Government property) is the extent to which you should be grateful enough to return the favor to your benefactor--the Government. Anything else is WRETCHED ingratitude; i.e., Republican."

    Let the responsibility-evading responses begin.

    Awaiting the pen...
The ink is about to flow,
It's time for that law to go.
    A few moments more,
and we'll set right the score.
    All will be free,
    To say I am "me".
As we await the ink dries,
    We celebrate as DADT dies.

    (Sorry feeling silly...)

Yeah, everyone here knows what I'm watching this morning, and I think I'm not the only one. I have hated this law for 17 years, even if it doesn't affect me personally, it was never right. It was never something that helped our nation. It was a cheap enshrined bigotry which should have never been allowed in our nation. May our services men and women walk a little taller today, be a little happier, and a little prouder.

    Ask, Tell
The outgoing 111th Congress made one of its final and most historic decisions today, as the Senate voted to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell--the seventeen-year-old policy closeting gay men & women in the military. By signing the repeal, President Obama will fulfill a key campaign pledge, achieving an unambiguous victory after a seemingly endless succession of compromises. Everyone who fought for repeal, and everyone who wishes Obama and the Democrats well, should savor this moment: they many not have many more opportunities like this, for awhile.

When the history of the 111th Congress is written, the struggle over and passage of health care reform and the repeal of DADT will stand out as its signal accomplishments. Today's decision in particular assures the 111th an important place in a longstanding, perhaps never-ending, struggle to forge a more perfect national community.

Two Things to Think about Today
    1.

A Senate vote not to legalize illegal students set back an emerging movement and left the president’s policy in disarray.

    The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
    With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Why Not To Leave the Unemployment Issue To the GOP
When the GOP takes over Congress in January, the national debate around issues like unemployment insurance will change. It will probably start looking more like this: "Can we reduce the 10% jobless rate by booting people off of unemployment sooner? After all, we've kept upper income taxes low, there must be jobs. If anything, we should lower taxes more."

Hyperbole? Listen to 2012 GOP presidential aspirant Mitt Romney on the subject.

This is why I don't want to leave the unemployment issue for the new Congress to deal with in January: At best, their understanding of the issue is magical thinking. But if you want my honest opinion, they truly, deeply, enduringly do not give a fuck.
